Here are the basics and they are ugly:
Employers must provide insurance for an employee AND his family at 72.5% of the premium cost for the employee and 65% for the family premium. If the employee declines your coverage, you will have to make a like contribution to the new Health Insurance Exchange run by a Commissar (I kid you not) who will oversee several Federal agencies including Labor and Health. You will have to report all this annually on detailed forms to the IRS. You will also do this for PART TIME employees (fun!).
You must have a formal internal process to notify employees of their options and do the paperwork for them to opt in or out (This is open invitation to HR law suits). If an employee opts out, you have to pay 8% of the associated annual payroll to a government insurance agency (which will no doubt be as efficient as the Post Office, Amtrak, Medicare and Medicaid).
The legislation is over 1000 pages long. It is a wonder any human can understand it. I had to read it over and over again.
You can stop this nonsense masquerading as cost reduction by calling and emailing your Congressman. It’s simple - google their name or simply google US Senate or House of Representatives. Now would be a good time to do this. |
